McLaughlin Bennett 5.0 The Philosophy

With “McLaughlin Bennett 5.0”, Dr. Richard P. McLaughlin and Dr. John C. Bennett present the latest modification of the McLaughlin/Bennett/Trevisi treatment concept which they originally developed together with Dr. Hugo Trevisi.

McLaughlin Bennett 5.0 reflects recent advancements in clinical research, incorporating these developments into an updated prescription. This version features modified torque and in/out values to enhance treatment precision and outcomes.

The Trevisi Philosophy

The name ‘Trevisi’ is synonymous with Dr. Hugo Trevisi, who co-founded the globally recognized McLaughlin/Bennett/Trevisi treatment philosophy.

With the Trevisi Prescription, the proven expert in self-ligating multiband appliances not only presented his own bracket technique, but also a new treatment concept. This is based on the optimization of the sliding mechanics and the use of light and constant forces. The archwire is allowed to move freely in the bracket slot, which reduces the classic friction and increases the efficiency of the sliding mechanics. In addition, the Trevisi Prescription allows for better three-dimensional control of tooth movements.

The FACE Philosophy

Since Lawrence F. Andrews introduced the straight-wire appliance in 1970, several techniques have emerged that modify certain torque, tipping, and rotation values, while still largely preserving the core elements of Andrews’ original prescription. In many instances, these adjustments were aimed at addressing specific challenges in orthodontic biomechanics, although in some cases, the rationale for the changes remains unclear.

Currently, developments also show that the concept of customized arches and brackets for treating the full range of orthodontic anomalies is taking precedence over prefabricated systems.

PhysioDynamic System by Dr. Ron Roncone

Preset appliances were first introduced to orthodontics nearly fifty years ago. The Andrews Straight Wire System® has been altered, refined, and modified by many clinicians. The original idea, of course, was to eliminate or greatly reduce wire bending in finishing cases.

The objectives of the Roncone PDS prescription include the elimination of posterior balance disturbances as well as the elimination of excessive anterior contact.

McLaughlin/Bennett/Trevisi The Philosophy

Dr. Richard P. McLaughlin, Dr. John C. Bennett and Dr. Hugo Trevisi presented their own prescription after about 20 years of clinical experience with the Straight Wire appliance. They used the Andrews standard values and modified them according to clinical criteria, especially with regard to torque.

Their philosophy reflects a highly systematic approach based on a comprehensive system of brackets, a precise specification for their positioning on the tooth, various archwires and the use of gentle, constant forces.

Roth The Philosophy

Since Lawrence F. Andrews introduced the straight-wire appliance in 1970, several techniques have emerged that modify certain torque, tipping, and rotation values, while still largely preserving the core elements of Andrews’ original prescription. In many instances, these adjustments were aimed at addressing specific challenges in orthodontic biomechanics, although in some cases, the rationale for the changes remains unclear. Dr. Ronald H. Roth introduced the bracket values defined according to his philosophy a little later.

The Roth Prescription reflects the view that the correction of malocclusion must be carried out in harmony with a well-functioning occlusion. Aspects such as facial and dental esthetics, functional occlusion and temporomandibular joint position, as well as stability and periodontal health, should be included in the assessment.

Standard Ricketts The Philosophy

Dr. Robert M. Ricketts pioneered the ‘Bioprogressive Philosophy,’ which emphasizes treating orthodontic issues with a holistic approach to the face. In addition to his numerous contributions to orthodontics, including cephalometric analysis and VTO, he was also among the first to use brackets with programmed values in a 0.018” slot for the maxillary anterior in 1970.

Standard Edgewise The Philosophy

The Edgewise technique marks the early development of fixed orthodontic treatments. Unlike the later Straight-Wire technique, Edgewise brackets lack pre-programmed values. Instead, tooth movements and the desired alignment are achieved solely through the adjustment and bending of the archwires.
