McLaughlin/Bennett/Trevisi philosophy

turns 25

Almost exactly a quarter of a century ago, on the day of the 1997 Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) in Philadelphia, orthodontists Dr Richard P. McLaughlin, Dr John C. Bennett and Dr Hugo Trevisi presented their McLaughlin/Bennett/Trevisi system to the international orthodontic community. Since 1975, they had been conducting intensive research with and on the Straight Wire technique introduced by Lawrence F. Andrews, and they presented an overall concept based on their decades of experience. Based on the treatment philosophy they had developed, this concept included a comprehensive range of standard brackets, precise specifications for their positioning on the tooth, and complete information regarding arch form and force level. The whole thing was supported by two textbooks published to date (1993 and 1997), in which the authors provided clinical tips and recommendations.

Most widely used concept worldwide

Over time, the McLaughlin/Bennett/Trevisi technique became the most commonly used treatment method by orthodontists worldwide. It was continuously developed and optimised over the years with the aim of creating an ‘ideal’ system. At the same time, two further books were published (2001 and 2014) that reflected these adjustments.

With McLaughlin Bennett 5.0, the latest version is available.

Since the beginning of 2017, Dr Richard P. McLaughlin and Dr John C. Bennett have been working closely with FORESTADENT. The result of this fruitful collaboration is McLaughlin Bennett 5.0, the latest modification of the popular concept. It takes into account significant advances in recent years and the resulting clinical findings, which have been incorporated into the latest prescription in the form of adjusted torque and in/out values. A corresponding archwire series rounds off the system, which is available exclusively from FORESTADENT.

Since 2018, FORESTADENT has also worked closely with Dr Hugo Trevisi, who passed away unexpectedly in January 2021, resulting in the Trevisi technique for the use of self-ligating brackets.
